Unlike the World Cup, the two teams agreed, strongly, that there would be no make up day for this game, no clouds, no rain, no toss deciding the outcome of the game and firmly announced that Duckworth and Lewis are NOT welcome at this ground. ICC officials were welcome so that they could study how a game can be played without a third umpire, replays, referee and all the techno hoopla. Commentaries were blared around the ground with music at times in the background. Umpire Tilak Wijedasa even took the opportunity to blare out a solid rendition of Louis Armstrong’s “Blueberry Hill.” There were no charges assessed… the spectators clapped.

A Royal Thomian, no matter where it’s played, is special! This was the 19th Annual Royal Thomian encounter of California – played at the picturesque Woodley Cricket grounds of Van Nuys in California. The toss was won by Old Thomian skipper Shantha Jayasekera (Canadian National residing in Toronto, flew down for this event) and elected to bat on a firm but slow wicket. There were no estimated surprises on the pitch except that it could help the bowlers a trifle as the day sped on.
